Tuna Sushi

This article is in regard to mercury levels in sushi. In many fish and shellfish, there are traces of a highly toxic chemical element called mercury. Regularly consuming high levels of mercury can lead to nervous system and brain disorders.

Women who are nursing or pregnant are advised to avoid mercury exposure as it can have adverse effects on brain and nervous system development of fetuses and children.

Mercury is more prevalent in some fish species than in others. A general guideline is to avoid large predatory fish, such as shark, swordfish and tuna. They generally have high levels of mercury.

This post catagorizes different sushi dishes as good, bad, or ugly, based on their estimated levels mercury.

Good= low levels, Bad= medium levels, Ugly= high levels
